I get the impression reading this forum's recent posts that the staff of the Archive have been unusually silent in recent times.

There seems to have been zero response from the staff to the e-mail privacy issue discussed below, and requests for moving videos to a new section are seemingly ignored too.

When did this silence start, and does it mean anything for the future of the Internet Archive?

The last time any admin wrote on the forums was August 20 giving a short explanation of the situation. "Staff input" is taking a little bit long.

At the rate this is going IA is going to lose many users, contributions and donatations.

The "staff input" line might have been believable at the time it was posted but after more than a month later it seems more like it was just double-talk to cover up the real issue, whatever that might be. I still fail to see why we are still being denied an explanation. There is no reason for staff to continue to keep this situation shrouded in mystery. Surely, out of more than a months time, someone at IA could have found five minutes or so to tell us what's happening. It's not like they're going to bruise their little fingers on their keyboards or anything.

I don't understand why they would halt volunteers doing moving. Surely if they don't have enough staff they should be relying on volunteers even more?

I'm not saying they should just let anyone move stuff, but if there's a forum regular who has been on here for years and has the trust of other regulars, what's wrong with giving them the ability to do everyday maintenance?

So was the lengthy silence all about this FBI thing? This deathly quiet on IA's part only succeeded in fueling the fires of speculation. I admit my criticism of the situation has probably been more blunt than others because I really care about the people who upload here and it tended to give me a case of tunnel vision. I'm always willing to look at the bigger picture as long as someone's willing to show it to me. I love the archive, so when it looks like things are going downhill, I feel helpless because the only tool at my disposal is griping, but if I could actually do something to make the situation better, I would. So, now that a staff member is making his presence known, I ask this...are the films going to start moving soon?

The archive is so usefully great, I've been expecting it to disappear any day since I got broadband in 2003. It's almost too good to believe, and it's free. Whenever there is "radio silence", I think the end is near. I hope things are going well within its mysterious workings, and it comes back someday at full vitality, its complexion rosy, its flanks bulging with muscle, its blinky panels and sliding mechanisms bolted on tight as it rockets sideways into a dim future.

I sent an e-mail to Renata Ewing, an IA staffer who had been most helpful to me in the past:

"Renata, I’ve turned to you in the past for help in navigating the morass that is the Internet Archive. Now I have another question:

"What’s going on?

"Things have been stuck in “recently added” sections for many weeks. I don’t see anything new going up (which is painful to me, because I was starting to see many ‘60s/‘70s-vintage sci-fi B-movies emerging…and I like those turkeys a LOT).

"Is the staff on vacation? Have there been budget cuts?

"The IA is a great resource, and I’d hate to see it fold.

"Best regards,
<<>>"

Someone named "Molly Bragg" replied:

Hi <<>>,

"Renata is no longer with Internet Archive. However we are in no danger of folding, thank goodness:-)

The best place to send your questions is to: info@archive.org or post your question to the appropriate forum.

Best,
Molly

Hello, Molly. I don't mean to take up alot of time, but I hope this problem "log jam" is resolved soon. Hope all is well with you and the rest of the Ia staffers. Best regards.

Why does it seem like when we DO get any response to our questions it still doesn't tell us anything? Why can't they just give us a straight answer? Why the big mystery?

I don't know what's more annoying, having our questions ignored or when we get an answer it's a lot of empty double-talk. Are these people supposed to be librarians or politicians?

it is a sad state of affairs to say the very least...

from the job openings it doesn't appear that they lost or are looking for anyone...

"Sita" was posted into Feature Films 36 days ago--that's the most recent, I think.

The email issue is a scandal in my opinion. I will be working up a press release over the next couple of days that will attempt to bring some focus to this issue.

Ah, yeah, just noticed the "this just in" which you're referring to.

So there used to be a gap of just a few days between updates, and now there's been a gap of 36 days and counting since the last update. Doesn't sound good.

While things here in the forum have been slow and files haven't gotten moved for a long time the IA blog seems still to be getting updated on a regular basis which leads me to doubt it will shut down.

Would someone who has used this site longer than me care to post on the IA blog to ask what the heck's going on?

(I'm fairly new here so my words wouldn't carry much weight I'm afraid...)

It sure is odd about the lack of an official presence here. There have been no substantial updates to the Prelinger Archives section of ephemeral films for a long time, despite a promised deluge of new titles last year. It's like visiting a museum from which the curators and guards have vanished, but the front doors are still open.

Do you think the gubbamint finally got in unpleasant touch with the operators of this site about all the jihadist videos over in OPEN SOURCE? I thought it meant potential trouble for the archive when those controversial and disturbing entries started showing up in huge numbers, years ago. It's 90% of the new content, or something like that. You never know what's going down with the PATRIOT ACT in force. The ACT has provisions that make it a crime to discuss certain dealings with Homeland Security, so the archive could be bound and gagged and we'd never know.

Just guessing out loud....

Well... as this email bug means every uploader's email address is visible, any illegal videos might actually be a goldmine for law enforcement investigators.

Well, yes, I'm sure law enforcement might have an easier time catching illegal file sharers, but this also makes it easier for spammers and other con artists to do their job too. Do you want to have your inbox filled with spam or worse? Not me.

Well I was thinking more about what FP said, if there really are pro-terrorism videos on IA then the police will love the fact that they can see all the uploaders' addresses.

It's funny actually, a while ago IA apparently fought a legal battle not to reveal a single user's address to law enforcement authorities, but now they've revealed EVERYONE'S address to EVERYONE. :-)

I think I saw something mentioned in IA's privacy policy where, in certain situations, they would HAVE to reveal e-mail addresses to law enforcement on certain occasions. That doesn't apply to this situation, though. If they are going to make everyone's e-mail adresses available to everybody, why have a privacy policy?
